Archaeological Ordinance Proposal

Since the early 1970s, the City of Savannah has developed and approved ordinances to protect the National Historic Landmark District and other locally designated historic districts. One feature not included in these or any other regulations is an archaeology ordinance.

The City is currently considering the creation of this type of ordinance to allow the community to recognize our archaeological resources as well as understand and celebrate our community’s unique and diverse history

Some issues that prompted this proposal:

  • Need to protect archaeological resources which are not currently protected
  • Need to address National Park Service recommendation for National Historic Landmark District
    -Condition from “Threatened” to “Satisfactory”
  • Recent issue with cemetery on White Bluff Road
